The Mass Bay Youth Lacrosse League (MBYLL), comprised of youth lacrosse teams from 125 town lacrosse programs, recently announced their selection of 45 players to represent Massachusetts at the Orlando Lacrosse Open in December. Frankie Smith, an 8th grader from Holden who has played in the Wachusett Youth Lacrosse program since 2nd grade, was one of 23 boys selected for the “Mass Bay Colonials” U14 team (12-14 years old) according to a press release.

Following a selection process which included recommendations from coaches, teachers and community leaders, roughly 200 elite MBYLL athletes earned an invitation to the Colonials tryouts held on two days in August, the release states. MBYLL engaged a professional lacrosse organization to undertake an objective evaluation of each player during tryout sessions, and team selections were announced in September.

Smith, an honors student at Mountview Middle School, earned a spot as a Colonials defenseman. This is the second MBYLL all-state team on which Smith has played according to his father, Frank Smith. The first was the Mass Bay Stars & Stripes that he played in the Trilogy Providence Tournament in 2016. Frankie also plays club lacrosse for the Central Kings and is having a “breakout season” as a slotback with the Wachusett Middle School Football Team, he added.

The Mass Bay Colonials were first formed in 2014 to represent Massachusetts youth lacrosse at the FIL World Championships Festival Tournament in Denver, CO. MBYLL has brought back the Colonials to travel to Florida to play at the Orlando Lacrosse Open at the Omni Championsgate Resort on December 1s and 2nd.

“The Mass Bay Colonials is an extension of our community-based youth league and was founded to promote town-based lacrosse and the elite athletes who commit to their communities each spring,” said Joey Picard, Colonials GM and Director of MBYLL Operations.

Of the Colonials players, Picard stated: “these are truly special athletes who will embody the caliber of lacrosse Massachusetts is proud to exhibit on a national stage”.
